The focus of this project was to design a cohesive multi-device solution that enhances daily routines through technology. I chose to focus on the growing community of backyard chicken keepers and how technology could make coop management easier, safer, and more efficient. After researching common pain points for chicken owners, I designed a smart coop device paired with a companion app to promote healthier, more sustainable living.

As interest in sustainable living continues to grow, more people are turning to backyard chicken keeping as a way to produce fresh eggs, reduce food waste, and take a more active role in where their food comes from. While rewarding, caring for a small flock requires daily maintenance, environmental monitoring, and attention to safety—all of which can feel overwhelming, especially for beginners. Unlike traditional pet care, backyard chicken keeping lacks modern, tech-enabled solutions that help with these daily tasks. Most coops rely on manual checks and analog tools, creating a gap in the market for systems designed specifically for small-scale chicken owners.

Backyard chickens represent more than just a food source—they reflect a growing cultural shift toward self-sufficiency and sustainability. However, without the right tools, managing their care can lead to stress, inconsistency, and avoidable mistakes. A connected coop experience can empower chicken owners to better care for their flocks, reduce mental load, and ensure animal well-being. It also helps lower the barrier to entry for those interested in backyard farming, encouraging more people to take part in sustainable practices. Technology has the potential to transform this niche lifestyle into a smarter, safer, and more inclusive experience.

To better understand the needs of backyard chicken keepers, I conducted a mix of secondary research methods. This included:
Exploring online forums and communities such as Reddit and backyard chicken Facebook groups to observe common concerns, routines, and shared advice.
Researching chicken care best practices to understand environmental needs, behavioral patterns, and health risks.
Analyzing competitor products in smart home, pet care, and agricultural tech spaces to identify feature gaps and opportunities for innovation.
This research helped me develop a foundational understanding of both the chickens' needs and the typical responsibilities of their caretakers.
Through this research, I identified several recurring challenges faced by backyard chicken owners:
Task management fatigue: Owners often forget or delay routine tasks like feeding, watering, and egg collection, especially during busy days or bad weather.
Coop security anxiety: A major concern is remembering to close the coop door at night to protect chickens from predators.
Lack of integration: Owners rely on a patchwork of physical tools, alarms, and reminders—there’s no unified system tailored to chicken keeping.
These insights shaped the direction of the project, revealing an opportunity to create a smart, multi-device solution that simplifies care and improves both animal welfare and user confidence.
